General John A. Gordon

General John Gordon was the Presidents Homeland Security Advisor and an Assistant to the President. In this role he was responsible to the President for developing interagency homeland security policy, advising him during domestic incidents involving terrorism and natural disasters, and leading the Homeland Security Council staff. Before joining the Homeland Security Council, General Gordon was the Deputy National Security Advisor for Combating Terrorism at the White House.

General Gordon came to the White House having been the Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Under Secretary of Energy.

Prior to assuming his post at the Department of Energy, General Gordon served as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, from October 1997 until June 2000, and earlier had been the Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support at the Central Intelligence Agency.

General Gordon entered the Air Force in 1968. His early assignments were in research, development and acquisition with focus on the Minuteman and Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. He was a long-range planner at Strategic Air Command and served with the U.S. State Department in politico- military affairs. Later, he commanded the 90th Strategic Missile Wing.

During President George H. W. Bushs Administration, General Gordon served with the National Security Council in the areas of defense and arms control, including the oversight and completion of the START II negotiations. He then became a senior member of the Secretary of Defense's staff and later, the director of operations, Air Force Space Command. He later served as special assistant to the Air Force chief of staff for long-range planning, where he was responsible for restarting and integrating a long-range planning process in the Air Force.

General Gordon has an extensive background in science and research. He was a physicist at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory in New Mexico and was a research associate at the Sandia National Laboratories. General Gordon earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in physics from the University of Missouri, a Master of Science degree from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Masters in Management from New Mexico Highlands University. He is a retired four-star general.
